Ivory Coast and Estonia
Lucy Ash hears how Ivory Coast is using soap opera and 'husband schools' to educate errant men ; Allis Moss takes a trip to Tallinn and reflects on European dreams in the Baltic
Everywhere in the world, soap operas tackle the everyday issues people really care about - the pains, as well as the pleasures, of family life. In Abidjan, Lucy Ash meets one of the most famous people in Ivory Coast - a TV actress whose on-screen tribulations have shown the whole country how errant husbands can wreak havoc. Scripted drama is not the only ingenious way that has been found to reach inconsiderate or reckless men; in the interior of the country, some NGOs are now running "husband schools" - targeting men as a tactic to improve the health of new mothers. And we take a trip to Tallinn with Allis Moss, who finds Estonians are still holding on to their European dreams.
