London: When the Whistle Blew
Rugby World Cup winner Josh Lewsey tells the story of the ultimate sacrifice made by London鈥檚 rugby and football players during World War One. Rugby players at Rosslyn Park rugby club were amongst the first to volunteer.
Rugby was an amateur sport so players were quick to volunteer. Ninety per cent of the players at Rosslyn Park volunteered in August or September 1914; the first two months of the war. Football players were relatively slower to volunteer because the sport was largely a professional game.
