Queen's University, Belfast: Hospital for Wounded Soldiers

Queen's University is in the leafy heart of south Belfast.

During the war an avenue of wooden hospital huts was erected in the grounds between the university and Botanic Gardens.

This was one of many hospitals quickly established to deal with mounting casualties from the front. Most famously James Craig, the future Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, gave over his home - Craigavon House in east Belfast - to help those who suffered shell shock.

Dr Tim Bowman (of the University of Kent and the Arts and Humanities Research Council) explains how the local community rallied together in a time of need.
