The French spend 12 times as much on Scotch Whisky as they do on Cognac, making links to Europe crucial for the industry.

In this programme Justin Rowlatt tours Diageo鈥檚 Glenkinchie distillery to learn about the process of making Scotch with guide Neil Forbes. The chief executive of the Scotch Whisky Association David Frost explains how the sector has adapted to changing markets worldwide and stresses the importance of links to the EU.

Ian Murray, a Labour MP and the shadow minister for trade and investment argues that 鈥渘o鈥 a vote in the Scottish independence referendum guarantees an immediate future for the country in the EU while James Dornan, a Scottish National Party MP and a spokesperson for the yes campaign says an independent Scotland would have time to negotiate its ongoing place in the Union following a 鈥測es鈥 vote.

Justin also meets Kai Ivalo, the director of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, who teaches him the fine art of nosing.
