Lynne O'Donnell sees tension spiking in Kabul as security forces and the Taleban battle it out ahead of the Afghan presidential election. She also mourns her friend, journalist Sardar Ahmad, who was killed along with his wife and two of their children in the recent attack on the Serena Hotel.
In the eastern borderlands of Romania, Monica Whitlock hears a tale of a more private - and peaceful - revolt: the secret plot which two respectable men attempted to destabilise the Ceausescu dictatorship in the 1980s.
