Is the British education system failing black children?
A conference taking place in Birmingham on 8 March asks if the British education system is failing black children? It's being organised by the London Schools and the Black Child initiative (LSBC), which was set up 10 years ago by the Labour MP Diane Abbott, and has worked with black communities to highlight and challenge educational inequality. The group claims since LSBC began it has seen improvements in educational outcomes for black children. However, it claims that the education system is becoming more 'colour blind' at a time when the students themselves are becoming more diverse. In this extract, the 成人快手's Nikki Tapper speaks to Diane Abbott about the educational needs of black communities.
