The Gaumont Cinema Wurlitzer in Manchester

Opened in 1935, the Gaumont Wurlitzer in Manchester was one of the best in the UK.

During the past few weeks, we've been looking at the life story so far of the Wurlitzer which was opened in the Paramount Theatre in Manchester in 1930. Five years later, literally just a couple of hundred yards away on the opposite side of Oxford Street, the Gaumont cinema opened complete with its own extremely fine four manual Wurlitzer organ so let's turn our attentions to that instrument for a few weeks.
The Wurlitzer organ was one of the most successful ever installed in the UK and the man at the console on the opening night in October 1935 was Stanley Tudor. He stayed at the Gaumont as resident organist until 1953 and then returned for a couple of years at the end of the decade. He was also a frequent broadcaster from that venue but was gently criticised from time to time for seeming to endorse Manchester's reputation for wet weather by having as his signtaure tune, Singin' In the Rain. He redeemed himself somewhat in the second phase of his career by changing it to Powder Your Face With Sunshine.
