India's Monsoon Floods; Cricket in China
One man's story of escaping the raging torrents which ravaged Uttarakhand state. Plus, Fred Dyson sees fine play, but definite obstacles, among Shenyang's cricketers.
Jane Dyson describes the lasting impact of this year's devastating monsoon floods in northern India. In the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, it has become a seasonal custom for some young men to leave their home villages and spend the warmer half of the year earning money by looking after Hindu pilgrims to shrines in the mountains. One of them, Mahvir, recounts how he escaped the disaster - but his precious mule was not so fortunate.
Frederick Dove has been to Shenyang, one of China's sportiest cities, to see whether this giant of a country can take cricket to heart. While Chinese authorities are keen to promote some new national sports and win more prizes in international competitions, much of the public isn't well informed about cricket - much less passionate about it. And as for the prospect of competing in full-scale, long-format test matches lasting for days? The man from the Sports Ministry remains unconvinced.
