The Emir of Qatar has stepped aside after ruling for 18 years.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has handed power to his 33-year-old son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, saying it's time for the emirate to turn over a new leaf. "Our youth have proved in recent years that they are resolute people, that they comprehend the spirit of the times and participate in it."

A peaceful handover is a rarity for the Gulf, where most rulers remain in power for decades.

Sheikh Hamad saw Qatar transform from a tiny Gulf state to an influential global player. Known as "London's landlord", his trophy assets include Harrods and The Shard in the UK. Qatar also funded rebels in Libya and is now doing the same in Syria.

At 17:00 GMT, we'll hear from people in Qatar. What would you like to ask them?
