Pascale Harter introduces the pick of recent dispatches from correspondents, reporters and writers around the world. In Mali, the Foreign Legion is busy seeking out jihadi militants. Thomas Fessy braves the searing heat to follow them on their operations, finding vegetable patches as well as explosives. The world sees Germany as an economic powerhouse, but Steve Evans argues it's traditional small family businesses which bring the country success. Switzerland is famed for its neutrality, yet all its young men are obliged to serve time in the army. Perhaps it's just as well: Imogen Foulkes finds that not all recruits are keen to bear arms. Chariot racing may finally be over in Rome, afer thousands of years. Alan Johnston goes to the races to witness the end of an era.
