Nottingham gurdwaras: feeding the homeless
Langar goes a long way...
A growing number of homeless and unemployed people are seeking refuge in Sikh temples across the country. The Sikh Council UK says that thousands of sikhs and non-sikhs are now turning to Gurdwaras every week for free food and shelter.
There are around 300 Gurdwaras across the UK and they all serve 'langar' (free food) to visitors, but many are under strain because of the rising numbers they have seen in the last few years. Some Gurdwaras are also having to cope with the problems caused by drunks and drug addicts walking through their doors.
