Samba - an introduction
An extract from 'Blue Peter' introducing the Brazilian dance, samba, which dates back to the 16th century. Elements of the culture of Portuguese and African settlers come together to create a vibrant music and dance form. The dance is accompanied by fast-paced music provided by whistles, drums and a mixture of other percussion instruments. In addition to the rhythm, a sequence of dance steps have evolved. Dancers perform a sequence of steps in carnival costume. They demonstrate the box kick and step, samba sequence and basic samba footwork.
