'Follower' by Seamus Heaney (introduction and poem)
A football stadium is used to underpin the universality of Seamus Heaney's 'Follower'. Writer and poet John Hegley briefly introduces the poem and then reads it. The use of the football stadium and the father and son figure works well, because although the poem has but one speaker, this dramatic character in turn comprises at least two different personae - father and son. It looks back and also reflects the present, so the modern setting of the stadium reinforces the timelessness of the piece.
