The interwar years were dominated for Enescu by the completion in 1931 of the first major Romanian opera, Oedipe, which he had laboured over for more than two decades. During a period which was to prove difficult in his personal life he also wrote several pieces with a national style in mind, by attempting to reflect in music the soul of his people, rather than quoting folk tunes. With Donald Macleod.
