Beaver hotel
The beavers living in a pond in Wyoming have built a lodge made of branches and boulders. It is so strong that not even a bear could break into it. The only entrances are underwater and the beavers take refuge in the lodge whenever they are alarmed. Beavers can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes if they need to. Most lodges have at least two different entrances. Unlike marmots, beavers stay active throughout the winter and can swim under the ice to get back to their lodge. Infra-red cameras in the lodge in the winter show that the beavers stay in their lodge most of the winter and feed on logs. But they are also visited by muskrats who regularly head back under the ice to get reeds which they bring back to the lodge, perhaps as bedding. Maybe that is why the beavers accept them and allow them to share their food.
