Mark Thompson on Hamilton & Montgomery
About 400 years ago, James Hamilton and Hugh Montgomery came from Ayrshire to establish a settlement in the Ards.
The history of their exploits has been given a new lease of life - and Liam Logan is in Carrickfergus Castle to find out more from Mark Thompson.
Mark explains that the Hamilton and Montgomery manuscripts were originally handwritten by family members but now the Ulster-Scots Agency has digitised some of these documents on CD-Rom so that members of the public can acquire their own copies.
These documents talk about the impact of the settlers on Ulster, and Mark give us some historical background on the state of Ulster at the time of the Scottish arrival - and points out interesting linguistic points from the manuscripts.
