Too close for comfort?
The herring gull is much overlooked. It has a close relationship with humans, whether we like it or not. Simon King went to Llandudno to see the gulls and listen to the quintessential sound of the seaside. Herring gulls have all sorts of names, most of which are not repeatable on national television. Seaside towns discourage the feeding of gulls, and you can understand why - they are big powerful birds and could hurt a child's fingers as they come and snatch chips. But there are very few wild birds in Britain that give us such marvellous close views. In close proximity they are rather beautiful. Yet they are becoming increasingly rare in Britain. What a tragedy it would be if they disappeared.
