Managing the moor
Simon King is on the heather moorland above Lake Vyrnwy in Wales. Heather moorland is a managed landscape. Normally the heather is burned off on moorland like this, to prevent it getting too tall and woody, but it's too wet to burn reliably in Wales. Instead, large strips are being cut back by the RSPB, strips of varying widths encourage a flush of new life and attract diverse species. New plants, such as bilberry, attract insects which are in turn followed by small birds such as meadow pipits and stonechats and ultimately the predators that feed on them.
