The temperature is a constant near-boiling in Yellowstone's thermal springs, yet incredibly, huge colonies of heat-tolerant microbes thrive here. As the boiling water flows out from the central spring it cools, forming bands of different temperatures, each with a different collection of microbes with a totally different colour. Grand Prismatic Spring is one of the wonders of the natural world. It's thought that it was in conditions like this that life on Earth first started.
