Mamba danger
After a winter of inactivity, hungry snakes end up in the sugar cane plantations. The hot, humid climate is perfect for both sugar and snakes. Rodents, reptiles and amphibians thrive in this new habitat that has replaced the savannah. Streteched out at waist height, the mamba spends hours basking in the cane. Named for the colour inside its mouth, the mamba is olive green with a light underbelly that camouflages it from unsuspecting prey below. Large eyes give mambas better eysesight than most snakes and sudden movements help them strike with deadly accuracy. Their venom can kill a person in a couple of hours. The long forked tongue 'smells' approaching intruders, but here amongst the dense cane, they can't detect intruders until it's too late and they unfortunate person is right next to them. With no time to escape, the snake attacks.
