Charlie looks at the continuing appeal of trios, from the celebrated 1954 recording of Blue Monk by the Thelonious Monk Trio to the latest track by Les Triaboliques. Trio Matamoros from Cuba lasted 35 years, from 1925 to 1960, toured all over the world, making most of its records in New York; Son de la Loma is one of their finest.
Younger generations of trio musicians are represented by Trio Joubran and Amestoy Trio. (Miguel Matamoros, founder of the eponymous trio, died in 1971, two years before the eldest of the three brothers that make up Trio Joubran was born.) The three Joubrans all play the oud, that quintessential east Mediterranean instrument while the Amestoy line up combines accordion and guitar with tuba. Turkish clarinetist H眉sn眉 艦enlendirici cut his musical teeth in the ever-changing bands of veteran jazz percussionist Okay Temiz but it鈥檚 his work with the Taksim Trio that recently made him a household name outside his native country.
