Moth mayhem
High on the edge of a crater in Papua New Guinea, George McGavin inspects his moth traps in amazement. The variety of moths fluttering around the lights is staggering. The lamps he used, will only collect moths from a distance of 200 metres, yet George is overwhelmed with species - a clear example of the diversity in this small patch of rainforest. Amongst the huge variety, George spots a few he's never seen before and wonders if up to a quarter of them could be new to science. One species produces horrible smelling and tasting fluid from its thorax as a defence.
