The latest from the Global Mental Health Summit in Athens. The impact of new mental health laws in Egypt. Schizophrenia and hearing voices. The positive effects of a new recovery scheme.
This week鈥檚 programme comes from the Global Mental Health Summit in Athens. Claudia Hammond鈥檚 guest in the programme is Vikram Patel, Professor of International Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, based at the Sangath Centre in Goa, India.
Yolanda Knell reports on the impact of the Egyptian government鈥檚 first new mental health laws for 60 years. Under the old laws people who were locked up in an asylum rarely left. Now there is a move towards helping people with mental health problems in the community.
Hearing voices is often a symptom of schizophrenia. The voices can often be disturbing. Claudia hears from people who have learnt to live with hearing voices.
There鈥檚 a new buzzword in mental health 鈥 and that鈥檚 鈥渞ecovery鈥. For once, the idea has come from people with mental health problems themselves rather than the medical profession. It has spread from New Zealand, Canada, Australia and the USA and the idea is that mental health services exist not just to treat people but to promote recovery. Claudia talks to clinical psychologist Mike Slade, author of 鈥楶ersonal Recovery and Mental Illness鈥 and to Heather Straughan, researcher from The Recovery In-Sight Centre in Hertfordshire, England.
