Shocking Crime in Syria

A gang-rape in Syria has shocked the country and prompted a nationwide debate about sexual violence. The reason this particular crime has gained so much attention, including a visit to the family by President Bashar al-Assad, is the age of the victim. Khawla is just 4 years-old. The case is also unusual in that the family have spoken openly about a crime which is often hidden or hushed up. Outlook hears from the family.

Scots around the world return home

Reviving a two centuries old event, homecoming Scotland 2009 sees Scots from around the world gather in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. For every single Scot in their native land, there are believed to be at least five more overseas who can claim Scottish ancestry. Outlook sends its reporter to the global reunion.

Mum's the World from Kenya

A UNICEF report this year revealed that more than half a million women die every year as a result of complications during pregnancy and birth. About 99% of those deaths occur in the developing world. In Africa, one of the worst affected places, high fertility rates and a shortage of trained medical staff make having a baby one of the biggest health risks a woman will face in her lifetime. In the last of our series, 'Mums the World, we travel to Kenya, to meet teacher Sarah Muthoni Ngugi.
