Celebrating the life and legacy of John Clifford
Celebrating the life and legacy of The Bard of Kilwaughter - John Clifford.
Helen Mark presents a special edition of 成人快手 Radio Ulster鈥檚 weekly Ulster-Scots magazine show, to celebrate the life of John Clifford. Known by many as The Bard of Kilwaughter - John lived a full and varied life not least as a poet, actor, playwright and folklorist but is also remembered in broader terms as someone who kept the heritage, the old way of life and - crucially - the language around his home town - Larne - very much alive.
John - who passed away in 1983 - has been honoured with a Blue Plaque History Circle- which was unveiled a short while ago at the Larne Museum and Arts Centre. You鈥檒l hear conversations recorded at the event - not just with members of John Clifford鈥檚 family - but those who have involved themselves wholeheartedly in celebrating his legacy - the likes of Maud Hamill, Ian Crozier, Chris Spur and a few others. We鈥檒l also hear from Lolly Spence - a good friend of Kintra - whose book 鈥楾he Life and Collected Works of John Clifford - the Bard of Kilwaughter鈥 shone a light on a man ahead of his time in recording and preserving the customs and traditions of a place that lay so close to his heart.
As always, listeners are invited to contact the programme with a good Ulster-Scots yarn or event to talk about. The easiest way to do that is by email - kintra@bbc.co.uk.
