South Africa’s Rhino Hunters

Ashley is in South Africa exploring illegal poaching and the rhino horn trade, discovering how young men from deprived communities are being enticed into this deadly business.

South Africa has for years battled the scourge of rhino poaching, fuelled by insatiable demand for their horns in Asia. Ashley embarks on a mission to find out who is behind these brutal acts, discovering how the challenges young men face growing up in deprived rural communities can lead to illegal poaching.

Hanging out with men from KwaZulu-Natal – or Zululand – he earns their trust and joins them on a legal hunt for bushmeat in order to understand what day-to-day life is like here. He immerses himself in all sides of the issue - meeting an illegal poacher who is horrifyingly responsible for over 150 rhino deaths and a family whose son was killed while attempting to hunt a rhino. He even joins antipoaching units to see the measures being used to protect these incredible creatures.
