Roskilde to Copenhagen

Michael Portillo concludes his epic rail journey across Norway and Denmark, crossing an 18-kilometre box girder bridge between the islands of Funen and Zealand, known as the Great Belt Bridge.

Michael Portillo concludes his epic rail journey across southern Norway, the Jutland Peninsula and the Danish archipelago. He crosses one of Europe鈥檚 epic rail engineering projects: the Great Belt Bridge, an 18-kilometre transport link stretching between the islands of Funen and Zealand, composed of a box girder bridge, a tunnel and a suspension bridge.

At the bottom of Roskilde Fjord, he alights in the city of Roskilde, once a Viking trading hub. Five 1,000-year-old Viking vessels are preserved here, and to study their construction, seaworthy replicas are built. Michael is excited to set sail in one.

In Copenhagen, Michael chills out in Europe鈥檚 cosiest capital in pursuit of the Danish concept of 'hygge'. What does it mean? Michael consults the experts. His next stop is Allerod, where Danish furniture design broke through in the mid-20th century. Icons such as the Papa Bear chair and the Round Chair are still made here.

Finally, on the north eastern tip of Zealand, Michael reaches the magnificent 16th-century Kronborg Castle, the setting for Shakespeare鈥檚 Hamlet.
