Film director Chlo茅 Zhao is the only woman of colour to win an Oscar for best director, with her poetic drama Nomadland - and to this day, only one of three women to have won the coveted award.
Her films focus on outcast communities: indigenous people, cowboys and nomads. Most recently, she has entered the Marvel Universe to direct the most diverse film in the franchise so far. Her upcoming film, Hamnet, tells the story of Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, and will be released later this year.
