Zakir Hussain's Triple Concerto with the 成人快手 SSO

An intoxicating combination of Eastern and Western traditions creates musical magic with the 成人快手 Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Alpesh Chauhan.

In December last year, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Zakir Hussain. A legendary tabla virtuoso, global ambassador of Indian classical music and four-time GRAMMY winner, Hussain鈥檚 extraordinary legacy inspires musicians and music lovers around the world. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and fans across the globe.

Conductor Alpesh Chauhan intended to bring Zakir Hussain's Triple Concerto to Glasgow with Zakir himself playing, and we are grateful to Zakir鈥檚 brother and tabla player, Fazal Qureshi, for stepping in to perform in this special celebration concert alongside Niladri Kumar (sitar) and Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri). Hussain described his composition as 鈥渁 tale of love, tradition, and the transforming power of art," and this programme consisting of an intoxicating combination of Eastern and Western traditions creates musical magic.

After the interval we hear Rachmaninov's tone poem Isle of the Dead, based on Arnold B枚cklin鈥檚 haunting painting. Concluding the programme is Stravinsky鈥檚 ever-popular Firebird in its 1919 suite form, showcasing the composer鈥檚 immaculate skill and vivid use of his compositional palette.
