SPEECH: SERMON (FR DEREK LLOYD)听

St Augustine of Hippo says;

鈥淭he just Simeon saw Christ with his eyes when he took the infant into his arms, but he also saw him with his heart because he recognised the infant as the Son of God.鈥 What do we see with our eyes? And what do we see with our heart? What is the difference? Is there a difference? How many baby boy鈥檚 were presented in the temple? How many young women came for the rites of purification? What was different about this baby and this young woman? I would suggest that what we often see with our eyes is quite different to what we see with our heart, our eyes often perceive merely the surface of things. They see the fact of something, even to some extent its reality, but our eyes give us merely one dimension in the way that we experience things. Our heart gives us a different experience altogether, with our hearts we feel things, and in doing so we empathise and identify with people and situations, we delve with our hearts into the realms of 鈥榤ystery.鈥 We experience aspects of reality which words and images express somewhat inadequately. With our eyes we see, with our hearts we feel, with our sight we identify, with our hearts comes the recognition. Sometimes what we recognise in our hearts can take us by surprise, and challenge the perception of our eyes. Simeons eyes and heart recognise the sacrifice of Jesus, the redeemer. He tells the young woman that a sword will pierce her heart. The joy of the nativity ends with pointing our sight, and our heart, towards the cross, and therefore the redemption and resurrection beyond it.听
