Liz Johnson - Swimming Against the Tide

The powerful story of Newport Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson, whose long-awaited sporting dream suddenly became the hardest moment of
her life.

In 2008, Newport swimmer Elizabeth Johnson flew out to the Beijing Paralympic Games to swim in the race that her whole career had been
building to. But by the time she got there, everything had changed.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at six months old, her Paralympic swimming journey began when her devoted mother, Bonnie, encouraged her to join a local swimming group for disabled swimmers. From there, Liz began her journey to the Paralympics, and juggling school with training and competitions, always supported by Bonnie, she and her mum travelled all over the country as her talent grew.

In 2003, her training increased tenfold as she began training in Swansea at the most elite para-swimming hub in Britain. Here, she joined the coach and the squad that would take her to her first Paralympic Games in Athens, where she won a silver medal in the SB6 breaststroke at just 18 years old. Now she knew exactly how to take on Beijing in 2008 and with her eyes set firmly on gold, she was focused on becoming the best in the world.

The next four years brought quicker times, championship titles and world records. With her training routine nailed and on track for her Beijing gold medal, she was swimming the best she ever had in her entire career. Everything was perfect... until Bonnie was diagnosed with cancer, and her world came crashing down.

A story of guts, resilience and a mother鈥檚 love, Swimming Against The Tide reveals just what it took for Liz to make it to Beijing and
fight for her dream in the face of illness, injury and heart-wrenching reality.
