Gospel that made the charts
Beverley Knight rewinds 50 years of Gospel music that made it out of the church in the charts, in the clubs and on our screens.
Beverley Knight returns with episode two of her new series exploring fifty years of Gospel music. In the second instalment, she reviews songs with a gospel message that made it into the mainstream through the pop charts. Whether on Top of the Pops or the Top 40 countdown on Radio 1, these songs crossed over secular hits and uplifted listeners for years.
Beverley shares her admiration for the No. 1 by Eternal, featuring Gospel legend BeBe Winans, and the story behind Candi Staton's Disco song, which was resurrected into the Top 10 by a mash-up by The Source. We also hear an unlikely Reggae cover of George Harrison鈥檚 My Sweet Lord by Bob Marley鈥檚 son Damian and dust off a mid-80s Top 5 song by Steve Arrington, initially thought to be a romantic love song.
