Tunes, chat and The Unthanks live in session
Stuart Maconie presents a special seasonal show with live music from Tyneside folk band The Unthanks.
Stuart Maconie presents solo, with a feast of great music and chat for weekend breakfast.
Today he is joined by Tyneside folk band The Unthanks for winter-themed live music and chat. Originally emerging from the group Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, The Unthanks were formed in 2009. They have since released a string of critically-acclaimed albums including 2015's 'Mount The Air' which won best album at the 2016 ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Their latest release ‘In Winter’ - the band’s sixteenth album – is a collection of seasonal and Christmas songs. The group - headed up by sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank with Adrian McNally – chat to Stuart about their love of winter music and perform a selection of atmospheric tracks from their latest album.
As part of their live session, The Unthanks also perform their song 'Tar Barrel in Dale'. The song was written by Becky and Rachel's father, George Unthank, about the New Year’s Eve fire tradition at Allendale, Northumberland. The song has been part of many Radcliffe and Maconie Christmas celebrations over the years.
Also on the show… Stuart hears from listeners and plays a finely balanced blend of new and old music, perfect for a dark December morning.
