What Have the Ulster Scots Ever Done for... Innovation & Invention?
Jane Rea and Jennie Browne investigate what Ulster-Scots have done for innovation and invention.
How exactly have Ulster-Scots figures, their language, culture and activities influenced so much of what we in Northern Ireland and beyond know and appreciate? Jennie Browne and Jane Rea are going to find out - and on this episode they’re focusing on what the Ulster-Scots community have done for… innovation and invention.
After visiting the Planetarium in Armagh, the Ulster Aviation Society, the Ulster Folk Museum, a retirement home in Ballymena, a physics lecture at Ulster University and after taking a first aid course – Jennie and Jane find the answer is – quite a lot!
From ejector seats to sun spots, deliberators to the microwave via walks on the moon and atom splitting – the work, research and discoveries of Ulster-Scots folk really has impacted our every day lives over the last century – and this show is the proof.
As for our presenters - Jennie Browne, half Northern Irish and half Caribbean, has always had a fascination with her identity and sense of place. But she feels there is a large Ulster-Scots shaped hole in her knowledge. So -with the guidance of Ulster- Scots presenter Jane Rea, Jennie plans to explore the Provence, get her hands dirty and learn about a community who have given us so much.
