Hugh’s Meadow legacy in Parkgate, genetics scheme a game changer for farming, mushroom industry in crisis and chainsaw woodcarver in County Laois.
Presenter, Nicola Weir, travels to Parkgate in Ballyclare to talk to regenerative farmer, Eddy Ellison, about Hugh’s Meadow. It’s seven acres of farmland that Eddy has given over to nature and named in memory of his grandfather. She’ll also hear more about the new £57 million genetics scheme from Irish Farmers’ Journal Northern Ireland correspondent, Peter McCann, who says it’ll be a game changer for farmers here and then it’s off to County Laois to speak to chainsaw woodcarver, Joe Hyde, who found a passion for the art during lockdown and has even had a statue of St Brigid commissioned by the local priest. The mushroom industry in Northern Ireland is in crisis and John McArdle, chair of the Mushroom Growers Association, explains how a change in the way visas are administered could boost the industry. And it’s ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Northern Ireland’s Book Week and Nicola speaks to poet, writer and Queen’s University Lecturer, Mary Montague, about her contribution to a new anthology called ‘Under The Changing Skies’ – a collection of the columns written for the Guardian’s Country Diary – and she exposes the hidden world of the mallard!
