Small Boats, Refugees and Migrants
Jonathan Freedland takes the long view of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.
The late 1500s saw waves of migration into England as Protestants from France and what are now Belgium and the Netherlands sought refuge from wars and persecution. Historian John Gallagher joins Jonathan Freedland to draw out the evidence for people smuggling routes across the English Channel, and discusses how 'strangers' (as migrants were called in the 16th century) were received once they'd made the crossing. With 成人快手 News Correspondent Tim Symonds, and Madeleine Sumption, Director of the Migration Observatory.
