In Berlin, an SS officer arrives in the building, and another resident sees the Nazis arrest her new husband. War throws the lives of two London residents into turmoil.
By 1936, the ruling Nazi Party is transforming the lives of the residents at the building in Berlin. One new resident, academic Paul Dittel, has returned to Germany to join the SS, the elite political soldiers of the Nazi Party.
Meanwhile, in London, life continues relatively normally for the residents of Montagu Mansions - but as war breaks out, Italian resident Claudio Foglia suddenly finds himself declared an enemy alien. And back in Berlin, one resident sees her husband arrested days after their wedding, while her brother flees to Belgium in the face of rising anti-Semitism - all while other residents involve themselves further with the Nazi regime.
