Janacek from the Leonkoro Quartet

Leonkoro Quartet plays Janacek's String Quartet No 1 'Kreutzer Sonata', a work inspired by Tolstoy who in turn was inspired by Beethoven.

The Leonkoro Quartet plays Janacek's String Quartet No 1 'Kreutzer Sonata' and Alexander Gadjiev plays Liszt's powerful transcription of a movement from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.

The multi-award-winning Leonkoro Quartet performed Janaceks First Quartet at Wigmore Hall earlier this year. It was inspired by Leo Tolstoy's novella 'The Kreutzer Sonata,' which had itself been inspired by Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9, known as the "Kreutzer." As Janacek wrote of this dramatic quartet: "In this work I was imagining a poor woman, tormented and run down, just like the one the Russian writer Tolstoy describes in his Kreutzer Sonata."
