In this second episode Jeff Goldblum uncovers the connections between jazz and hip-hop, and early jazz & dance music. He explores the wave of hip-hop artists who've spent their time ‘crate digging’ for jazz samples and ‘breakbeats’, mixing these with their DJ scratching and rapping to create brand new musical expressions. De La Soul’s Plug One talks us through the creation of their hip-hop classic ‘Stakes Is High’ using a jazz sample from pianist Ahmad Jamal and explains the connections between rapping, scatting and improvisation. Prince gets in on the act too and the saxophonist Eric Leeds talks about his jazz project collaboration Madhouse with this multi-faceted megastar. We also hear from some of the female trailblazers in the word of hip-hop, embracing jazz including Grammy winning artist Queen Latifah. Featuring contributions from Robert Glasper, Lizzo, Yazz Ahmed, Herbie Hancock, Shabaka Hutchings, Alan Gorrie of the Average White Band and insights from broadcasters Tina Edwards and Kevin Le Gendre.
