with Cathy Macdonald
Ruby Wax in conversation, plus the talking points from the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland this week.
Last week saw the debut of the video game Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, hailed for its empathetic portrayal of psychosis, as it confronts prevailing stereotypes about the condition. Cathy talks to psychiatrist Paul Fletcher, Professor of Neuroscience at Cambridge University and consultant for the game, to discuss the significance of authentic representations of this sometimes misunderstood mental health condition.
The outgoing Moderator, The Very Rev. Sally Foster Fulton, reflects on her own Sacred Space, a lake near her childhood home in South Carolina.
This week’s This Spiritual Life guest is comedian, author Ruby Wax, delving into her remarkable journey as mental health campaigner, her experiences as the daughter of immigrants, her formative years in Chicago and her stage show which is adapted from her most recent book – I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was.
Cathy is joined by Reverend Stella Campbell, Minister of Kingshill Parish Church and Moderator of the Presbytery of the North East and Northern Isles; Stuart Kelly, writer and Church of Scotland elder; and Reverend Hayley Cohen, Minister of Northesk Parish Church in Musselburgh, East Lothian. Together, they explore some of the major talking points from this year’s General Assembly of the Church Of Scotland, as well as some of the major stories making the news.
As well as the announcement of the General Election, the panel discuss the recently published report on the infected blood scandal and the impact of years of campaigning and heartbreak of on individuals fighting organisational failures.
And among the key topics from last week's annual General Assembly are financing the future of the Kirk and its buildings, and recruiting new ministers and parishioners. Plus social issues including the inclusion of trans people within the church, and assisted dying.
