Cheltenham Festival 2024: Sean Shibe, the Dunedin Consort and Alim Beisembayev
A piano recital from New Generation Artist Alim Beisembayev, and a meditative journey from the Renaissance to the present day with guitarist Sean Shibe and the Dunedin Consort.
A Cheltenham Festival double-bill from New Generation Artists past and present.
The first half sees Kazakh pianist Alim Beisembayev present a programme of romantic gems from across the repertoire, with Debussy鈥檚 evocative Images, a Romance by Clara Schumann and Chopin鈥檚 much-loved kaleidoscopic Etudes.
After the interval, guitarist Sean Shibe and the Dunedin Consort take us on a fluid, folk-inspired journey tracing the roots of the Scottish-Canadian diaspora from the renaissance to the 21st century. Beginning with Scottish lute manuscripts, they trace a line via Purcell鈥檚 music for viols, through to living composers James Macmillan and Linda Catlin Smith. It culminates in a brand new guitar concerto from Canadian composer Cassandra Miller, 鈥淐hanter鈥� 鈥� which draws on an old Highland air for bagpipes.
