Jocelyn Rendall and a cast of voices read women's letters from the 18th and 19th centuries found in the Orkney archives, in this historical series based on her book Farstraers. The letters, papers and documents reveal how women lived at a time when so many men left Orkney for work, for military service and to make their fortune.

The programme also features contributions from Orkney Voices, who share their own Orcadian dialect poetry reflecting on the more contemporary experience of women in the islands right up to the present time.
