Iv谩n Fischer, his Budapest Festival Orchestra and soprano Anna-Lena Elbert mark the 100th anniversary of one of the 20th century鈥檚 great originals with Mysteries of the Macabre 鈥� three arias from Ligeti鈥檚 opera Le Grand Macabre that explode in a cartoonish riot of irony and remarkable technique. Meanwhile Sir Andr谩s Schiff is the soloist in Bart贸k鈥檚 Third Piano Concerto, an exquisite, elegiac musical farewell. Beethoven鈥檚 鈥楨roica鈥� Symphony ends the programme: a passionate, provocative statement of musical and human possibility.
