"It stops barking! It eases off to a whimper!"
Sean finds that behaving in a certain way can help to silence barking dogs.
"I've noticed something during my walks in the country," Sean says. "There are two farms with gates, ones with netting so that the dogs can't get out. When the dogs hear me coming they'll bark. That's the dogs protecting their area. But I've noticed this: if I turn my head away from the dog, and this first one is an Alsatian, and let it see only the back of my head, it eases off to a whimper."
Sean demonstrates the whimper.
"It's like it's saying, 'Come back and fight me!' And then there's this other house, at least four of these wee yappy dogs. Not a good bark between them."
Sean demonstrates the yappy dogs.
"And I try this same thing," Sean says. "I make sure my head's turned away. And all four stop barking."
Sean pauses.
"And I don't know what's going on!"
"There's an old saying," says John in Belfast, "'You couldn't get a girl to look at you, never mind get a dog to bark at you!' I think you might have that same problem."
