Gwen John, The Mab and Abi Morgan's Memoir

Gary Raymond and guest critics review the Welsh arts scene. This month they explore visual art, memoir, children's literature and the Wales Book of the Year shortlist.

Gary Raymond and guests cast a critical eye on the Welsh arts scene. This month Gary is joined by academic and critic Emma Schofield and novelist and critic Francesca Rhydderch.

They explore the Gwen John exhibition at the Martin Tinney Gallery in Cardiff, which features oils and sketches from one of Wales's most important artists of the 20th century.

The panel give their verdict on Abi Morgan's powerful new book This is not a Pity Memoir. The Cardiff-born Emmy and Bafta-winning screenwriter of hits such as The Hour and The Split tells the harrowing story of her husband's near fatal brain condition and her own journey through breast cancer with arresting honesty and her customary wit.

Gary and guests discuss a new retelling of the tales of the Mabinogion aimed at younger readers. Bilingual and beautifully illustrated, the crowd-funded children's book The Mab is edited by Matt Brown and former Children's Laureate of Wales Eloise Williams.

And they reflect on the Wales Book of the Year English language shortlist - admiring it as well as wondering about a few titles that didn't make the cut.
