Ron Carter
Jamie speaks to Ron Carter – composer, bandleader and the most recorded jazz bassist of all time – about playing with Miles Davis, his early days and his amazing career.
Jamie’s guest this week is the legendary composer, bandleader and bass player Ron Carter.
The most recorded jazz bassist of all time, Ron Carter has made well over two thousand records in a career stretching back over 60 years. He was part of Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet in the 1960s, has recorded dozens of albums as a leader and has played with a staggering number of 20th century jazz greats. His discography is unmatched, and he’s still adding to it – just last month he picked up his third Grammy award for recent album ‘Skyline’ with Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Jack DeJohnette.
As Ron celebrates his 85th birthday he talks to Jamie about starting out on the cello, how constant gigging in 1960s New York City helped him grow as a bassist and musical experiments with ‘head chemist’ Miles Davis.
