A reflection and prayer to start the day with the Rev'd Dr Stephen Wigley, Chair of the Wales Synod of the Methodist Church
A reflection and prayer to start the day with the Rev'd Dr Stephen Wigley, Chair of the Wales Synod of the Methodist Church.
Good morning. My wife Jenny is a great David Bowie fan, so when we got married she came with a collection of vinyl LP鈥檚 and a cat called Ziggy with whom I had to establish a relationship. Why Ziggy? Well of course, this was Bowie鈥檚 alter-ego, the androgynous Martian rockstar who came down to earth with his band, the Spiders from Mars. And it was at the Toby Jug, a pub in Tolworth in London, that Ziggy Stardust made his first appearance, some 50 years ago on 10th February 1972. By all accounts there were only about 60 people to witness it, for all that many more would want or claim to have been present. Ziggy didn鈥檛 last long, with Bowie retiring him to a sell-out concert at the Hammersmith Odeon a year later in July 1973. But in this brief period he would have a profound impact on popular culture, not just in terms of introducing make-up, colour and excitement into rock鈥檔鈥檙oll, but also opening up the possibilities for recreating oneself as an artist, something which was key to Bowie鈥檚 own creative search and development.
There鈥檚 been no-one quite like Ziggy Stardust since. Jenny鈥檚 cat has long since passed away and Bowie himself died in 2016. But he continues to remind us that we don鈥檛 have to be bound by what we were or where we鈥檝e come from; that we can share in the divine freedom to become who we feel called to be, that process which Christians know as becoming a new creation. And in these dark winter days, perhaps that鈥檚 something worth holding on to.
Creator God,
You are the source of all that is and have left a mark of your creative imprint on each one of us; help us to find the courage to become the people you call us to be and the compassion to welcome those who share in this process of recreation.
For your kingdom鈥檚 sake, Amen.
