Robert Burns took two tours through the Scottish Highlands in 1787. Cathy MacDonald follows in his footsteps and finds out about his impressions of the landscapes, his attitude to Highlanders, their culture, music and adherence to Jacobitism.
Cathy visits Culloden, the Falls of Foyers, Loch Lomond, Inveraray and Perthshire. She鈥檒l find out what impact the places and people he met 鈥 including fiddle player, Niel Gow 鈥 had on his work.
One of Burns鈥 great loves was Highland Mary. She was the inspiration for Highland Lassie O and Highland Mary. He also wrote Will Ye Go To The Indies, My Mary suggesting they planned to leave for a new life together, had she not died before they had the chance.
Culloden was within living memory during Burns鈥 lifetime. Many still feared and despised Highlanders, but not Burns.
Ghabh Raibeart Burns d脿 chuairt tron Ghaidhealtachd ann an 1787. Tha Cathy Dh貌mhnallach a鈥檒eantail air a sh脿il, a faighinn a-mach d猫 shaoil e dhen d霉thaich, is d猫 a bheachd air na G脿idheil 鈥 an dualchas, an ce貌l, agus an taobh ri na Seumasaich.
Tadhlaidh i air C霉il Lodair, Eas na Sm霉ide, Loch Laomainn, Inbhir Aora agus siorrachd Pheairt. Cluinnidh i mun bhuaidh a bh鈥檃ig gach 脿ite, agus daoine a thachair air, leithid Niall Gobha am f矛dhleir, air a chuid b脿rdachd.
Bha Burns trom an gaol le t猫 le G脿idhlig, 鈥楳脿iri Ghaidhealach鈥. Sann dh矛-se a rinn e or脿in leithid Highland Lassie O agus Highland Mary. Sgr矛obh e cuideachd Will Ye Go To The Indies, My Mary - mar gum biodh iad an d霉il imrich thairis - mur a b鈥櫭 gun do chaochail ise.
Ri linn Burns, bha gu le貌r be貌 le cuimhne air Bl脿r Ch霉il Lodair. Agus ged a bha m貌ran gealtach ro na G脿idheil is t脿ireil dhiu, cha robh Burns nam measg.
