Shepherdess and author from the Yorkshire Dales, Amanda Owen, talks to Gary about her new book, Celebrating the Seasons. In this new book, Amanda shares funny and charming stories about her life through the farming year with her family and four-legged friends at Ravenseat, from lambing to feeding.
Queen of Soul music and West End star Beverley Knight tells us about the brand new musical, The Drifters Girl. Beverley stars as Faye Treadwell (鈥楾he Drifters Girl鈥�), the world鈥檚 first African-American female music manager and manager of The Drifters, who fought for three decades with her husband to turn Atlantic Record鈥檚 top vocal group into a global phenomenon. The musical tells her story.

Pause For Thought
Last Friday Gary, it was my Dad 鈥撎齮he Rev. Mullins鈥� 70th听birthday. The day before, it鈥檇 been听mine.听鈥楥os in the words of my Mum, I was the best present he ever got thirty-three years ago 鈥� and this has handily taken the pressure off any subsequent gift buying for him! This year I thought I鈥檇 mark the milestone with something to reflect on听my Dad鈥檚 adventures听so far. With the help of someone with bags of artistic flair, we created a map of his life, highlighting places he鈥檚 lived, and some of the best memories made there. There was his hometown of Cardiff,听the city of听York, where my sister and I were born, London, where we grew up and now St Albans where he鈥檚 become a grandparent to Rory and our latest addition, Teddy.听
听
We threw in references to trivial things that weirdly make up big chunks of my memories now; like the bus stop he鈥檇 walk me to every morning before school, where we鈥檇 wait patiently for the 102 or 299 to whizz me to the tube. A guitar and a flute also feature; harking back to the days when he鈥檇 cajole me into a classical duet听with him 鈥� or听even better, a hymn or carol for one of his Sunday services (!) 鈥� when, if truth be told, I was more than happy with my collection of 鈥楽mash Hits Playalong for Flute鈥�, with their CD backing tracks that accompanied听every music-book. Honestly, an instrumental version of Breathless by The Corrs with 12-year-old me piping away the tune is really quite the rendition of this noughties classic!听
听
Zooming out and seeing life segments illustrated听in a map听like this got the old reflective cogs whirring. How quickly听life has听have flown by (I say this now contemplating my own daughter鈥檚 route to school听next year!) and听the many threads of connection that weave together what can听almost feel like a series of mini lives.听听I also thought about the thousands of tiny, memories I鈥檇 forgotten 鈥� almost wishing I鈥檇 had the endurance to keep a diary.听听Perhaps that doesn鈥檛 matter.听听I was reminded of the words of Maya Angelou; 鈥減eople will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.鈥澨�
