Let’s Talk about Blackfishing & Sportswashing

Ankur and guests chat about the criticism Jesy Nelson’s new track Boyz has received. We also talk sportswashing after Newcastle United was bought by a Saudi backed group.

Ankur and guests, ex Take Me Out contestant Iman Les, presenter and podcaster Moeed Majeed and one half of Hype and fever Naveen chat about Jesy Nelson’s new track ‘Boyz’ & the criticism it’s received. The music video has had millions of hits. In the video, Jesy is heavily tanned and her hair is styled with wigs and braids. She wears basketball shorts and gold teeth, and sings about wanting a boy who's "so hood, so good, so damn taboo." Some people have criticised her saying it's wrong for white people to profit from imitating stereotypically black characteristics - when black people themselves have been held back for having the very same characteristics.

He is also joined by Newcastle fan Aman Seghal and journalist Sana Noor Haq to chat about sportswashing following the news that Newcastle United has been brought by a group backed by Saudi Arabia. The club is now one of the richest in the world - which could mean money to buy some of the world's top players. But many campaigners were appalled. That Saudi Arabia where homosexuality is banned and women's rights campaigners imprisoned was allowed to have some sort of involvement in the Premier League.
